Film synopsis

Based on Kate Grenville’s novel and inspired by a true story, LILIAN’S STORY is a triumph of heart and spirit from the director of STRUCK BY LIGHTNING.

For 40 years Lilian Singer has been locked up in a mental hospital by her father. Left to her own devices she has lived in a world of torment and despair completely shut off from the outside world. When Lilian’s release is eventually secured by her eccentric Aunt Kitty and her brother John, she faces the great unknown and embraces it with passion and courage.

Searching the streets of Sydney for the essence of love and affection she never received herself, Lilian’s journey becomes one of self-realisation and underlying contentment. Explored through a series of moving flashbacks her story unfolds with a colourful rainbow of characters that rest between the dark clouds of her past.

With outstanding dual performances from Toni Collette (in an AFI award winning performance) and Ruth Cracknell as Lilian, and supported by Barry Otto (BLISS) and John Flaus (NEWSFRONT) LILIAN’S STORY is both inspirational and rewarding.
